Google Android

Google's beta test of the next iteration of its mobile operating system is ongoing, and on schedule. Today the company released Android 14 Beta 3, and this one marks what Google calls "platform stability". This means that the developer APIs and all app-facing behaviors in the OS are now final, and won't change until the mass market release.

This is the point where third party app developers will want to work hard to integrate the new features into their apps.

With this release, Android supports font scaling up to 200% by default, in order to provide low-vision users with additional accessibility options. Also, users can grant partial access to their media library when an app requests any of the visual media permissions introduced in Android 13. There are also updates to core OpenJDK libraries, and security changes regarding app intents.

If you're already enrolled in the Android Beta Program, you'll get Beta 3 as an over-the-air update. If not, you can enroll over here with an eligible device. Speaking of which, this is the first Android 14 release that the new Pixel 7a has access to.

Next up, in July the last beta will follow, and then the final release at some point after that - Google so far hasn't committed to a specific launch month, but if we go by what happened last year, August seems likely.
